The first human settlement in the history of Dubai was in approximately 3000 BCE, when the area was inhabited by nomadic cattle herders. Dubai became a separate Sheikhdom in 1833, when the Al-Maktoum dynasty of the Bani Yas clan (initially from Abu Dhabi) took it over peacefully. Spend a rewarding time exploring Dubai, experience its culture and learn about the UAE’s history on this full day tour.
Start your full-day adventure in the Al Seef district at Dubai Creek, where the city began to grow. Retrace the footsteps of fishermen, pearl-divers, and weavers who once came to trade here as you wander through the Sikkas, the pedestrian streets that line the water’s edge.
Stroll through narrow alleyways in Dubai’s oldest Al Bastakiya quarter as you make your way to Dubai Museum located in Al Fahidi Fort, built in 1787. This is the oldest existing building in Dubai with square-shaped towers occupying three of its corners. It was built of coral rock and mortar in several phases.
Next, you will be mesmerized by the vibrant, colorful trade in Souk Al Kabeer. Also referred to as Souk Al Kabir or Meena Bazaar, this trading area is a community all to itself. Located in the area of Bur Dubai, this is one of the oldest residential areas in the city with a predominantly South Asian population, restaurants and shops. You will then board an Abra, a traditional water taxi, and cross Dubai Creek.
Walk through the Spice Souk, where sacks of jute overflow with fragrant spices and herbs brought by Dhows sailing in from India and Iran, as in bygone times. This souk is in eastern Dubai, in Deira, and comprises several narrow lanes which are lined with open and closed-roof stores. Stores in the Spice Souk sell a variety of fragrances and spices from frankincense and shisha to the many herbs used in Arabic and South Asian food.
By now you will have no doubt worked up an appetite, so make a stop and enjoy lunch at an Emirati restaurant.
Continue after your meal to Zabeel Palace for a photo-stop outside the home of Dubai’s ruler and UAE’s Vice President. Stop next at the 21st century Etihad Museum; be enthralled with the story of UAE’s foundation, told via a unique experience-driven journey through pavilions, exhibitions and interactive programs exploring the events leading to UAE’s unification in 1971. Finally, you will see Union House where the documents of unification were signed.
