Mzuzu City
Travelling about 367 Km north of Lilongwe, you come to the quiet and beautiful city of Mzuzu, the biggest town in the northern region. It is the country’s third largest city and known for its cool climate. The popular Mzuzu coffee is processed is here. The tea grown here is recognized around the world as being among the world’s finest. To the south of Mzuzu City is Viphya Forest, one of the largest man made forest in Africa,

Salima
The town of Salima is 22km east of the lake and 110km and about 1hour 25 minutes drive from Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. Salima is connected by M5 (Lakeshore road). Chipoka is one of the key ports on the lake where most Lake vessels stop including the MV Ilala.

Salima is a week-end retreat for many from Lilongwe and is also popular for day visits.

Karonga
Further north is the historically fascinating town of Karonga. Lying close to the northernmost point of the Lake, this was the headquarters of the slave trader, Mlozi, and the scene of many battles. Karonga saw the first naval action of World War I! To crown its historical claim to fame, it has fossil beds which have yielded a fragment of humanoid jawbone roughly 2.4 million years old, and Karonga’s pride,

A dinosaur about 100 million years old, called Malawisaurus. A reconstruction of this dinosaur is housed in the very special cultural museum in Karonga, where you can book historical tours of Karonga, and which is part of the Uraha Foundation. Likoma and Chizumulu Islands
Perched close to Mozambique, the only two habited islands on Lake Malawi, Likoma and Chizumulu are a fusion of history, modernity and a true blend of Malawian cultures. The Islands’ rich history dates back to the late 1890s when early missionaries established a post on Likoma. To date, a Gothic Cathedral looms above the island with a statue of St Peter holding the keys to the Gates of Heaven.

Built in 1905, the Cathedral is one of largest in Central Africa. Likoma is easily accessed by air through an all weather international airport. Water vessels, with the MV Ilala as the most popular, also service the Ilands. Nkhatabay
Much of Nkhatabay district comprises steep forested hills. The lake is at its deepest Ruarwe, Usisya. Clear clean water changes hues from greens to blues to almost purple. The variety and richness of these colours is something to behold. Whether one approaches the district from the south along the lakeshore road or from the west descending from the hills of Mzuzu, the journey is very rewarding.

Blantyre City

Mulanje and Thyolo
At an impressive 3000m above sea level, Mount Mulanje is the highest in the South- Central Africa. On the southern side of the mountain lies the great rift valley with spectacular free standing eroded mountains known as inselbergs whose unique geographical features inspired and provided a backdrop to J.R.R. Tolkien’s, the British author of an epic high fantasy novel “The Lord of the Rings.” one of the bestselling novels when he visited Malawi in the 1930s.

The country’s main tea growing districts are centred around Mulanje and Thyolo also known as the Shire Highlands. Tea estates bring the landscape to life and are part of the Shire Highlands heritage. Zomba
ocated 72km north of Blantyre on a modern road, and 290 Km south of Lilongwe, Zomba is Malawi’s newest city.

It is perched at the foot of the magnificent Zomba Plateau, hence the cool climate. The plateau is criss-crossed by streams, falls and still dams that cascade through the city.

Zomba was the capital of the British colonial administration and independent Malawi up to 1975 when it was moved to Lilongwe.

The colonial masters may have left many years ago, but their style of architecture is still evident in the city most notably Hotel Masongola; the old Governor’s Residence, old Parliament Building currently serving as the High Court, Gymkhana Club, among others.

Lilongwe – Capital City
The Capital City of Malawi and one of the major entry points into the country. It is the seat of government and is located in the central region. Lilongwe started as a small village on the banks of the Lilongwe River, and became a British colonial administrative centre at the start of the 20th century. Lilongwe is sometimes referred to as the green city because of its well tendered gardens and abundant trees, exotic and indigenous.

The City Centre and Capital Hill, where banks, Diplomatic missions and Government ministries are located, are worth visiting. “In the centre of the city, near the referral Kamuzu Central Hospital, is the Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary and Wildlife Centre, an area covering 120 hectares established to give visitors an idea of what the place looked like before construction of the city began. Lilongwe as a tourist destination has been greatly enhanced, thanks to three multi-million dollar landmark projects under which an International Conference Centre, and the country’s first five-star hotel and a modern 40, 000-seat stadium have been built. With the expansion of most of the city’s roads into dual carriageways to improve the flow of traffic and ease congestion, a visitor to Lilongwe no longer finds it difficult to travel within the city as was the case in the past. The capital is served by the Kamuzu International Airport, located about 25 Km north of the city. The airport, offers regional and international flight connections.

Malawian Airlines is the national flag carrier. The airport is also serviced by South African Airways, Kenya Airways and Ethiopian Airlines, among others.
