Liechtenstein Attractions
Liechtenstein and its 11 municipalities have a number of must-see attractions. These range from beautiful landscapes to museums, restaurants, sporting events and peaceful spots to lie back and relax. The best way to discover the country is simply to get out and explore. Nevertheless, we have put together a list of Liechtenstein highlights for those visiting the Principality for the first time.
Vaduz Castle
Vaduz Castle is located on a hillside overlooking the capital Vaduz. A path leads from the centre of the town up to the castle 120 vertical metres above. The castle is the symbol of Vaduz and the residence of the Princely Family. It is not open to visitors.
Centre of Vaduz
Within the space of just a few hundred metres, visitors to the centre of Vaduz will find the government buildings with their spectacular architecture as well as a series of museums, shops and much more. There can be few places where so many interesting things to see and do are packed into such a small space. Don’t miss out on taking a tour of Vaduz on the City Train.
Liechtenstein Museum of Fine Arts
The Liechtenstein Museum of Fine Arts is a state-owned museum of modern art in the centre of Vaduz. After a tour of the exhibitions, take a seat in the café and enjoy the atmosphere over a drink and some sushi.
Liechtenstein National Museum
Spread over an area of 2000m², the Liechtenstein National Museum showcases the history of the Principality and its flora, fauna and culture. There are also a number of smaller museums in the municipalities focusing on local traditions and a range of other themes.
Princes’ Way Hike
The Princes’ Way Hike is the classic high-altitude walking adventure in Liechtenstein. It starts at Alpe Gaflei at 1400 metres above sea level and offers breathtaking views as it crosses a number of sections secured with steel ropes and handholds on the way up over the Three Sisters mountains, past Alpe Gafadura and back to Gaflei.
Malbun, a haven for all the family
The mountain village of Malbun lies in the Liechtenstein Alps at 1600 metres above sea level. It specialises in family-friendly activities, both in summer and winter. These include attractive walks, great skiing slopes and entertainment for all ages.
World exclusive Eagle Hike
One of the highlights of any visit to Malbun is the Eagle Hike, an adventure unlike any other in the world! Guests have the chance to go on a walk accompanied by a golden eagle and explore the famous bird’s natural habitat in the heart of the Alps at around 2000m altitude.
Prince of Liechtenstein Winery
Many people in Liechtenstein know exactly what their favourite kind of wine is their own! Proof, if any was needed, of the quality of the wine produced by the country’s many amateur winemakers. There are, of course, also a number of vineyards in the Principality where guests can taste and purchase a selection of wines. The most famous of these is the Prince of Liechtenstein Winery and its “Herawingert” vineyard in a prime location in Vaduz.
Gutenberg Castle
Symbol of the country’s southernmost municipality, Balzers, Gutenberg Castle can be seen from many miles away. The grounds of this medieval fortress are open to visitors free of charge thoughout the year. The castle itself can easily be reached by a short walk through a beautiful vineyard offering views of “Heidiland” over the border in neighbouring Switzerland.
Ruggeller Riet Nature Reserve
Ruggeller Riet is a nature reserve in the north of Liechtenstein covering an area of around 90 hectares. Visitors can enjoy a magnificent selection of fauna and particularly flora, while the nearby Rhine and its built-up gravel banks are great for walking, cycling and inline skating.
Grossabünt Outdoor Leisure Centre
The Grossabünt Outdoor Leisure Centre in Gamprin is Liechtenstein’s newest swimming and leisure facility and covers a total area of 4.5 hectares.
Historical Eschnerberg Trail
The Historical Eschnerberg Trail between Bendern and Schellenberg lets visitors discover the ancient origins of Liechtenstein and leads up to the pre-historic settlements of Lutzengütle and Malanser.
