The Skutustaoagigar Craters found in this area, which is very volcanic, being as it is near to the Krafla volcano system. The nature of the lake itself and the volcanism of the region both led to the creation of these unusual formations. During eruptions, lava ran across this area, which at the time was swampy wetlands. The heat caused steam eruptions, which resulted in their crater-like shape. As they were not the sources of lava, or volcanoes in themselves, they are not considered true craters.
The Hverir Mud Pools are in an area of hot springs in northern Iceland. Hverir translates in Icelandic to a basic meaning of anything hot springs. It is located just east of the Myvatn lake, where you will see many smoking fumaroles and boiling mud pots, surrounded by sulfur crystals of many different colors.
Explore Grjotagja Rift, a small lava cave located near lake Myvatn famous for featuring a beautiful geothermal hot spring in its depths. Iceland is known as the Land of Fire and Ice and full of hidden gems, this is one such place that never fails to surprise visitors.
At the Dimmuborgir Lava Fields, also known as the Dark Fortress, experience a true wonder of nature that can be found nowhere else in the world.
