COMO UMA Hotels Bhutan
The mystical Dragon Kingdom of Bhutan is perched among the majestic Himalayas — a landscape scattered with dzongs, or small fortress-like monasteries, sweeping valleys and thick forests of rhododendron and pine. It is a kingdom of endless, open skies and a rich tapestry of Buddhist tradition, weaving through every aspect of what remains a largely agricultural society. At COMO Uma Punakha and COMO Uma Paro, we offer luxury travel experiences that truly immerse guests in the elusive essence of Bhutan, its culture, landscape and religion.

DINING AND CUISINE
Much of our produce comes from local farmers-Punakha is considered one of the most bountiful valleys in Bhutan-which means we benefit from fresh vegetable, fruit and dairy products every day. All of this is used in traditional dishes as well as our international menus.
White Water Rafting
The Mo Chhu river surges through the Punakha valley, winding its way past rice fields, villages and the iconic Punakha Dzong, where a retinue of 1,000 monks reside. White-water rafting trips take you to the heart of the action, with stretches of calm so you can sit back and take in the scenery, alongside grade two rapids where you have to grip on tight.
Himalayan Explorer
Head to the heart of the ethereal kingdom of Bhutan with COMO – a country often referred to as the ‘last Shangri-La’. With our Himalayan Explorer, you can explore the best of this magical country, combining stays at our two Bhutanese lodges – COMO Uma Paro and COMO Uma Punakha. Led by our English-speaking local guides, you’ll be able to get under the skin of a country where locals wear traditional dress and yak herders roam the mountains.
In Paro, hike to the gravity-defying Tiger’s Nest Monastery, which clings to the rockface 3,100 metres above the valley floor. Then cross to COMO Uma Punakha, over a mountain pass strewn with prayer flags. In this little-visited valley on the banks of the Mo Chhu river, you can hike, white-water raft and explore temples that seem caught in time, including the spectacular Punakha Dzong; home to a retinue of 1,000 red-robed monks.
Hiking Adventure
Hiking is almost a rite of passage in Bhutan, with more than 70 per cent of the country covered in forest and mountain. Twisting paths lead to hidden monasteries and temples, where views extend across the Himalayas. In Punakha, a popular hike takes you to the intricate temple complex of Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, perched on a hill amongst avocado, passion fruit and orange trees. There’s also a gentle walk to Chimi Lakhang temple, passing through rice fields to reach the local village where the temple stands.
In Paro, a five-hour drive over the winding Dochula pass, you can embark on Bhutan’s most well-known route up to Taktsang ‘Tiger’s Nest’ Monastery — a marvel of architecture, perched on a sheer rock face 3,000 metres above the valley. It is arguably the most iconic landmark in Bhutan, believed to be the place Guru Rinpoche landed on the back of a flying tigress, bringing Buddhism to Bhutan from Tibet.
Embark on these hiking experiences with our COMO Uma Bhutan itineraries.
Bhutanese Hot-Stone Bath
A traditional hot-stone bath is one of the most relaxing ways to finish a day. At COMO Uma Punakha, our hot-stone bathhouse is perched on the hillside overlooking COMO Uma Punakha. River rocks drop into the hot water where they crack and steam, releasing minerals that can relieve deep-set aches and joint tension. At COMO Shambhala Retreat, we finish the hot-stone bath treatment with our signature COMO Shambhala Massage, which uses long, calming strokes to remove any lingering stress.
Scenic Heli-Adventure
Bhutan is a country to see from the sky. With a birds-eye-view, the rice and chilli fields form a patchwork of colour, flanked on every side by mountains so high that even yaks can’t pass. Details jump out at you, like the smoke coil from a farmhouse, or a monastery tucked away deep in a pine forest.
With our Scenic Heli-Adventure, you can take a 90-minute helicopter ride across the kingdom’s heartland, exploring three distinctly different valleys: The Laya Valley (also known as the hidden paradise), the tropical Punakha Valley with its magnificent Dzongs, and the emerald Paro Valley, with rice paddies and ancient temples.
