Sinop

Sinop, historically known as Sinope, is a city with a population of 219,733 on the isthmus of İnce Burun, near Cape Sinope which is situated on the northernmost edge of the Turkish side of the Black Sea coast, in the ancient region of Paphlagonia, in modern-day northern Turkey.

It lies on an isthmus linking the Boztepe Peninsula to the mainland and is shut off from the Anatolian Plateau to the south by high, forest-clad mountains.Because it has the only safe natural roadstead on the north coast of Asia Minor (Anatolia), Sinope was in antiquity the foremost port on the coast, with its land approaches barred by a huge citadel (now in ruins) and its sea side defended by a strong wall. Its decline was associated with its lack of easy access to the interior and its rivalry with İnebolu on the west and with Samsun on the east. The latter has emerged as the largest Turkish port on the Black Sea.
