Get a true experience of local life in the seaport city of Valparaiso, a city of lights and an important site of Chilean culture and traditions. During the 19th century, an influx of European immigrants left their mark on the city’s architecture and cultural institutions, many of which congregate around downtown’s Plaza Sotomayor.
Travel like a local on public transportation and hop aboard the famous Ascensores de Valparaiso, hillside elevators that are part of the unique identity of this city. After decades of neglect, the number of working elevators in the city has dwindled to just 16. However, efforts undertaken by the World Monuments Fund and others have begun making plans which could help preserve the unique pieces of civil ingenuity.
Tempt your taste buds with a traditional Chilean lunch in a cozy, local restaurant and meet area artists. Your tour will also take you to a lookout point to admire the immensity of the ocean that quietly bathes the bay of the Pacific coast. Built on dozens of steep hillsides giving the town a unique layout comprised of warrens of alleys and side streets, the improvised nature of which has earned the nickname, “The Jewel of the Pacific.”
