The Kiel Fjord and the village of Kiel were probably the last settled by Vikings who wanted to colonize the land that they had raided, as for many years they had settled in German villages. Formed by ancient glaciers, the Fjord extends for 11 miles from the city of Kiel up to the Baltic Sea.
Along its length, you can see both the remains of Viking settlements and fishing villages, as well as massive shipbuilding, works. As a major maritime center, the Schleswig-Holstein capital of Kiel is where the 1938 and 1972 Olympic sailing events were held.
Your private transportation will take you past Germany’s largest shipyard, the HDW, with its mammoth gantry cranes, through the government district and past the old Olympic Port and Tirpitz Harbor into the Maritime Centre.
Next, you will cross the Kiel Canal for breathtaking views of the big ships in their lock chambers and on up to the waterway’s stunning Sailing Centre before stopping off at the Holtenauer Lighthouse.
Then take a step back in time when Kiel was the heart of Nazi Germany’s fearsome Kriegsmarine, visit the site of a dry-docked WWII submarine. (Exhibit entry is extra and at your discretion).
Your private tour also includes 1.5 hours of free time for lunch (at your own expense) and souvenir shopping. Your private tour can be customized to suit your requests to visit the exact locations of your choice.
Upon completion of the tour you will be returned to your ship at the pier area.
