Explore Old San Juan, the oldest settlement within Puerto Rico and the historic colonial section of the city of San Juan. The historic district is a National Historic Landmark District and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This tour will bring you right up to and inside a19th-century military barrack and a 500-year old castle.
Your first stop is the Museum of the Americas, a non-profit institution founded in 1992, offering a vision of the history and culture of the American continent, emphasizing Puerto Rico through numerous exhibitions and cultural activities. The museum is located in the Cuartel de Ballaja, formerly Spanish military barracks built in the 19th century.
After spending time at the museum, you will be driven to and will get to explore the 500-year old San Cristobal Castle, otherwise known as Fort San Cristobal. San Cristobal is the largest fortification built by the Spanish in the New World. When it was finished in 1783, it covered about 27 acres of land and was wrapped around much of the city of San Juan. Along with the fort, you will have an opportunity to visit several surrounding historical sites.
The tour culminates with free time for shopping among the numerous souvenir and artisans’ shops that the old city has to offer.
