Rotterdam is a major port city in the Dutch province of South Holland where the Maritime Museum’s vintage ships and exhibits trace the city’s seafaring history. The 17th-century Delfshaven neighborhood is home to canal-side shopping and Pilgrim Fathers Church, where pilgrims worshiped before sailing to America. After being almost completely reconstructed following WWII, the city is now known for bold, modern architecture.
Rising along the vast Nieuwe Maas (a tributary of the Rhine), Rotterdam started life as a medieval fishing village. Its importance skyrocketed in the 17th-century Golden Age following the discovery of the maritime trade route to the East and West Indies, and in the 19th century, the Nieuwe Waterweg (New Waterway) canal created a direct link to the North Sea. Today the port, and Europe’s largest, is the lifeblood of this vibrant Dutch city and the entire waterfront is packed with attractions along with visionary new developments.
Rotterdam has for many years been called the “Port of Europe” and here you will be welcomed aboard a unique and nostalgic passenger ship from 1908, settle in and relax as you motor across from the center of the city on a special trip through the Rotterdam Harbor.
Your scenic tour is conducted with an English audio guide providing you a whole new look at this “World Harbour City.” Be provided with information to enlighten you on the area highlights and give you detailed explanation. While cruising on the river Nieuwe Maas, you can relax and enjoy the view of the Rotterdam skyline. Typical for this skyline are the numerous and beautiful bridges plus new architectural buildings.
View many sights including the iconic cable-stayed bridge the Erasmusbrug, the posh yacht club Veer Harbour and Parkharbour, the entrance to the inner basins. See the Euromast, an observation tower designed by Hugh Maaskant and constructed between 1958 and 1960. It was specially built for the 1960 Floriade, and is a listed monument since 2010. Have a look at Schiedam, a city and municipality to the west of Rotterdam located in the Hague metropolitan area and Waal Harbour, the largest dredged harbour in the world. There is so much to see at every turn and bend along the water as you explore.
