Main Street is where your Gibraltar wine tour begins. The Casements, formerly the site of executions, is now Gibraltar’s social hub. Wine tasting and eating tapas in its restaurants will lead south to Landport Gate through Irish Town, onto the Cathedral, and then the Courts of Justice.
This spirited experience with locals starts at the entrance to Main Street, Casemates. Formerly known as Picket Square through the siege years. This area was used by the British forces for everything from military parades to public executions.
The Grand Casemate itself was later used for housing Moroccan migrant workers until the 1990’s. Today, it serves as Gibraltar’s social hub, boasting many pubs and restaurants. Here, you will sample a variety of wines (depending upon availability) and tapas.
A short walk south brings you to Landport Gate, built in the sixteenth century by the Spanish. Landport was originally the only entrance to Gibraltar. After its subsequent destruction, it was rebuilt in 1729.
Main Street leads you onto Irish Town, where you can see traditional buildings, facades, and a mixture of architectural designs – a testament to the diverse cultural influences on the Rock. Passing Cathedral Square, you’ll see the large, white, Moorish looking Holy Trinity Cathedral. Keeping north you’ll encounter the newly built Courts of Justice.
This spirited adventure to the sights conveniently found along Gibraltar’s new social sector also provides shopping opportunities. Book this Gibraltar tour now for your next incredible vacation. Be sure to dress according to the season.
